Civilla Durfee Martin (1866–1948) was an American Christian hymnwriter known for her contributions to gospel music. She was born on August 21, 1866, in Jordan, Michigan, and she married Walter Stillman Martin. Civilla and Walter were involved in Christian ministry, serving as Baptist evangelists and traveling extensively throughout the United States.
Civilla D. Martin is best known for writing the hymn “His Eye Is on the Sparrow.” The inspiration for the hymn came during one of Civilla’s visits to a seriously ill Christian friend. Despite her friend’s health challenges, she displayed a deep and abiding faith. When Civilla asked about the source of her friend’s joy and peace, she received the response, “His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.”
This conversation inspired Civilla to write the lyrics to “His Eye Is on the Sparrow,” capturing the essence of trusting in God’s care and providence even in difficult circumstances. The hymn was later set to music by Charles H. Gabriel.
While “His Eye Is on the Sparrow” is Civilla D. Martin’s most famous hymn, she wrote other hymns and gospel songs as well. She and her husband collaborated on various Christian publications and hymnals.
The story of “His Eye Is on the Sparrow” reflects Civilla D. Martin’s deep faith and her ability to draw inspiration from real-life experiences. The hymn has endured as a source of comfort and encouragement for generations of believers.
